In 1989 a National Children of Courage Award was made to a young girl from the North East called Joanne Gillespie. Joanne, who was 11, had endured two major operations and fought back against a recurring brain tumour.

Meet the inspirational kids who have faced more in their young years than most adults do in a lifetime. And, even though they are fighting life-threatening illnesses, they continue to smile through their adversity.

The event was held by Sterling Pharma Solutions based in Cramlington on Tuesday 25th June, a wet and dreary afternoon brightened by the afternoon's proceedings.
